Drive-thru Portraits

In the midst of the global pandemic, I took the opportunity to explore a series that limited my contact with people yet still captured them intimately. From there I became inspired by the concept of “People In Cars Getting Portraits“. It neatly adhered to new social distancing rules and allowed me to setup my make-shift studio on the fly - giving opportunity to invite my pals to  ‘drive-thru’, have a chat and get their portrait taken. The result is a dual portrait with the car itself having just as much of a story as the person, in essence an extension of their own personality.

If you and your car would like to be a part of this project please contact me via email with a pic of yourself and your wheels - info@timjones.co

Why this car?
I’ve always wanted a vintage car..Ford Capri, Alfa Giulietta, Mustang 1969..this was cheaper and smaller too! It combines Italian and Japanese design and embodies the late 60’s family car concept. Not sure how you could fit more than two people in it tho. This is red terror for me. It also makes everyone smirk or smile. Priceless.

Unsure as the km gauge has been replaced and put to zero about 20 times. Definitely over 400k.

What's getting you through ISO?

For the first two weeks of the pandemic I was overwhelmed with fear and anxiety; to this followed a sudden shift to a feeling of calmness and acceptance.

Exercise, music, reading, creative work (I make costumes..), distance from the media and a good sleep pattern have turned my isolation into a rejuvenation.

I’m glad I made myself a cool person to spend time with over the years.

Dude...it’s beautiful. It’s got the stacked lights and beak at the front, a big wide low arse, heaps of glass, bench seats and a purring dong.... why wouldn’t you?

Working as a full time practicing artist my life is pretty isolated already.
What’s getting me through all the other things that have changed; more time with my lover/partner and sneaking five minute swims in the Pacific Ocean.

Why this car?

My first car was a 1970 HT Holden and my father has always had one or two vintage cars in his garage. (Jaguar, Austin Healey and Alpha Romeo), so I have always had an interest in old cars. When Dad retired he also sold a couple of his vintage cars, so there was some space in his garage and he now had plenty of time on his hands. I started to search for a classic Holden to be an investment for me and give him a new project, to fill in some of his spare time. I came across this car advertised on the internet a couple of years ago, but it was in Perth. The pictures made the car look great and the asking price was within my budget. The owner talked it up and included shipping, plus I am a sucker for a deal, so I agreed to buy it, sight unseen. It has turned out to be the Best Buy! Absolutely no rust in the structure of the car and the more it is driven the better the engine and “hydromatic” transmission runs, I could not be happier with it, its great fun.

Beer and Scotch!!! Kidding, although a bit extra sure has helped. Thankfully work has not closed, so I have been very lucky to be able to go to work during the week and keep busy. On the weekends I do miss the contact with friends and family, but the weather has been nice and the golf courses have been open.
